How would you describe your style or approach to design?
I’m into saving the environment which influences pretty much everything I do. I like to keep my designs simple and clean and I adore mixing in natural, organic elements.
Tony: How do you plan to develop your sustainable design
style in the future?
New ways of designing and new products are always coming out, so keeping up on the new features will be key.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
I’m not sure if it’s the best, but it’s pretty darn good advice: The grid will set you free.
Tony: So I’ve heard. I think some students add, “but first it will make you miserable” to the end.
What is your best way to break out of a creative rut?
I took a life drawing class and an intermedia class last semester which was really great. I feel like I can use more hand drawn elements in my work now which I have never done before. I guess learning new ways of doing things away from the computer helps my creativity.
Where do you draw inspiration for your work?
I’m addicted to ffffound.com and could be on it for hours a day. I also look at interior design magazines which are inspiring for new shapes and patterns. I love being outside, especially during the warm months so I gather a lot from nature too.
Tony: How do you incorporate nature into your designs?
I use organic shapes and images a lot more in my personal work than anything. Nature is just so perfect for gathering ideas, especially color pallets.
Are there any local designers that had an influence on your work?
My friend, Tom Flaherty, will always and forever be an inspiration to me. He was the one who got me into graphic design and has taught me so much over the years. I really owe him everything for what I’m doing now.
